The Chairman

A folding chair with a face

Every club needs somebody in charge. Ours is furniture.

The Chairman is a folding beach chair wearing sunglasses. He has never stood up. He has never needed to. He presides over the club in the only way a chair can, which is by being available.

We picked him because he is the one object the whole club is organised around. A mascot that is a person makes the club about that person. A mascot that is a chair makes the club about sitting down, which is the entire point and the only rule that really matters.

He works everywhere

The reason he is a chair and not a seagull, a sun, or a guy in sunglasses is that a chair is not a place. A sun belongs at the beach. A chair belongs wherever you put it: the sand, a dive bar, the back of a comedy show, a curb outside a laundromat. The mascot had to travel, because the club does.

He travels

Venice was first, and there is no reason it should be the last. If you want to sit somewhere else, the Chairman folds up and comes with you. That is the one thing a chair is genuinely good at.
